National Wellness Month puts focus on self-care
August is National Wellness Month, a time to focus on self-care, managing stress and promoting healthy habits and routine.
When we discuss healthy habits, we usually hear advice about getting more exercise, quality sleep and promoting a healthy diet. Yet overall wellness can encompass a variety of practices that are just as important, but may be overlooked.
These include:
· Connecting with others: Maintaining positive relationships with loved ones, friends and co-workers is vital for emotional well-being. Join social groups or get together with others who share your interests.
· Limiting screen time: Replacing screen time with creative or physical activities has been shown to improve emotional, mental and physical health.
· Engaging in lifelong learning: Studies have found that learning something new stimulates your mind and has been linked to preventing dementia and other cognitive disabilities.
· Practicing good hygiene: handwashing, promoting a clean environment and proper oral care prevent illness and promote overall well-being.
At Flatrock, we recognize that wellness is an ongoing and holistic process. We encourage our staff and residents to be patient with themselves and make small, consistent changes over time to improve their overall wellness.
