Occupational therapy can play key role in improving mental health
When we think about occupational therapy (OT), it brings to mind exercises and therapy to help those with a physical disability learn how to do everyday tasks more efficiently. While that is certainly a big part of OT, did you know that the profession is also used to help those with mental health challenges?
OT can play an important role in the treatment and management of mental health challenges by focusing on improving individuals’ ability to engage in meaningful daily activities. Some ways OT can help include:
1. Assessment and Goal Setting: Occupational therapists conduct thorough assessments to understand the individual’s strengths, limitations and goals and then work with their clients to set personalized goals.
2. Environmental Modification: Occupational therapists evaluate their clients’ homes, work, and community environments to identify challenges and recommend modifications to promote independence and safety.
3. Sensory Integration: For individuals with sensory processing difficulties, such as autism spectrum disorder or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), occupational therapists can provide sensory integration therapy to help regulate sensory input and improve emotional regulation.
4. Stress Management: Occupational therapists teach relaxation techniques to help individuals manage stress, anxiety and mood symptoms.
At Flatrock, our occupational therapists provide holistic, client-centered approaches to improve our residents’ overall functioning, independence and quality of life.
